The house...

So… I guess the next part of the story is the house.  The new house is roughly the same size as our current house only it’s got a layout that’s better suited to our family and the location is the best part.  Our house in the US has a formal living room that we rarely use, a playroom AND a basement rec room (because we’ve had toddlers most of the time we’ve lived here and needed adult-only areas to relax) and the boys are sharing a 10x11 bedroom, which is fine, but since there are almost 4 years between them, not necessarily ideal.  The new house in contrast has a living/dining room area upstairs (along with a kitchen that’s smaller, but I’m reserving judgment until after living in it a few months) a huge rec room downstairs that we’ll all fit in and 5 bedrooms.  This means the 3 kids will be upstairs at the end of the main hall and the parents will be downstairs with an office right next to us.  Once those kiddos are in bed, the downstairs is OURS!  Which is good since the new house also has no ensuite, rather it’s a bathroom whose plumbing has been put in, but the bathroom is not “finished” save a toilet which does work.

For those who aren’t aware, homes in the Great North are generally sold with the basement unfinished. So the entire living area (ie: kitchen, bathroom, bedrooms, living room) is upstairs and the basement is a cement block, maybe the furnace and laundry are down there… basically the set up of my very first house, if you’ll recall. Anyways, then most people go on to add a bedroom or two, a 2nd bathroom and a rec room.  So when you see a house listed in the area in which we are moving, you’ll typically see a square footage listed of only the main floor… in our case 1080 square feet.  The house was built in the 1970s.  Having lived in a 1950s house and a 1990s house we feel we are prepared for the inevitable upgrades and repairs. Luckily the former owners were not planning to move 4 doors down the street to a slightly bigger house and every year were doing upgrades.  This means the windows, roof, bathroom, floors (no carpet, woohoo!) have all been done/upgraded as well as the downstairs is mostly done with the 2 finished bedrooms and rec room. This also means there’s still some “projects”.  But more on those in a minute.

So about the location.  The location is great!  It’s NEXT door to the kids’ school. Granted I may not be extolling the greatness of this after having balls end up in my backyard, kids yelling over the fence and the general noise at twice a day recesses.  However, at this time I’m writing sitting in carline. I have only 34 more days after this to wait in carline, and yes, I’m counting.  We live too close to have a bus, but it’s almost a mile to walk-each way which means with a 2 ½ year old in tow you either have to try to strap her into a stroller or it will take 2 ½ hours (not exaggerating…2:20pm to 4:45pm) to make the round trip walk.  I am pretty stoked to get the kids all parkaed up and wave from the window with my hot cup of coffee in my pajamas as they waddle along a la A Christmas Story in the snowdrifts to school.

We have one neighbor on the opposite side- a single woman with a friendly dog.  Yep, a dog we can visit with but don’t have to fee, walk or otherwise do anything for.  Behind us is a greenbelt of walnut trees that cannot be cut down due to the presence of an endangered tree lizard.  Beyond the greenbelt in 4-5 years they will build houses. Probably nice ones and we’ll be behind one of the nicer, pie shaped corner lots.  On the other side of the houses is a walking/biking trail with more trees.  In our actual yard there are 3 mature cherry trees, a Honey Locust tree (little tiny leaves) a Western Ash and a fir tree.  I know, sigh, moss and lawn issues galore. I will say I will miss my beautiful jungle like expanse of lawn until I can whip the new one into shape. Luckily I saw a Trugreen truck the other day and plan to stalk it until they come help me fix up the grass.  In the meantime, I once again ended up with a sloped yard (maybe house #4 will be a charm?) so there’s some landscaping that will happen.

Speaking of projects.  You know how I love a good project and have been kind of itching since we’ve had our US house Honey Do list done for about 2 years now.  Here’s our to do list for the new house:

1)      Sewer fix-done…  the house was sold knowing that there was an issue with the sewer pipe.  The week after we bought the house, we flew back for spring Break to start on the project list and this was the first priority.  Good thing, too since the break ended up being a true break, not just a crack and it was 5 feet from the foundation.  The good news was it was fixed in half of a day for less than we expected because  they dug less than they expected.

2)      New furnace-done… we knew there was an issue from the inspection with the furnace.  We thought it was a repair, but I’d noted on my list “save money for a new furnace” and sure enough the other one has some sort of leak and needed replacing”  The new one, I’m happy to report is very efficient and very quiet.

3)      New water heater-estimated…. Water heaters are commonly rented there.  It’s getting less and less now that people are realizing that a contract on a water heater means that in the time you rent one you could have bought 2 or 3 of them outright, so when we saw the tank was a rental, we planned on waiting for a sale. The furnace guy informed us once the bathroom is done, it will no longer be up to code and must be upgraded.  However, he was pleasantly surprised (as were we) when we discovered that a tankless was only $500 more than the upgraded one we need due to the furnace room being entered from the bathroom.

4)      Paint-lots of it.  Henri’s room is done, Valerie’s is almost done, our bedroom and office still need to be painted, the rest looks good.

5)      Bathroom completed-the plumbing is in, we need to design and complete the work.  As part of it, we’ll tile the laundry/furnace room as well and also move to door to the laundry room (Paul’s suggested a pocket door) since the previous owners put the vanity right in the traffic of the two doors of the bathroom and the laundry room and moving the door is easier than moving plumbing and electric.

6)      New siding, move windows down in back, new window in Henri’s room…. This should be done this month while we are wrapping things up south of the border.  The old siding was aluminum, probably original to the house and the back windows are really high but new windows, so we’re moving them down  6 inches while the sidings off and putting in a bigger window in Henri’s room.  The current window is a typical bathroom size and can’t be wider due to the garage location, but can be longer due to the location of the window in front of the closet, where there will not be any furnature anyways.

7)      New front door-maybe…definitely adding deadbolts… the original door is dated, but we may just paint and spruce it up a little. And add a deadbolt. Apparently the new neighborhood is super safe-no deadbolts anywhere.

8)      Outside-there’s a beautiful deck and gazebo area that needs to be stained this summer, I want to put my own stamp on the garden that’s currently there, would love to add a hot tub, and the steep slope makes me want to add some stairs or terracing and some landscaping. Also the issue of the weedy, mossy lawn.  I’d also like to do a shade loving ground cover under the cherry trees to avoid cleaning up pits and add a little path from the front yard around to the back.

9)      New insulation-in process… the insulation’s original and during inspection we found it had been home to a raccoon.  Before we even sent the paperwork back to the owners they tore out the old insulation, put in new, thicker insulation in the attic.  We need to insulate above the garage still and when the siding is added they’ll add more insulation around the edge of the house-should be much toastier this winter.

10)   Kitchen????  The new kitchen is quite a bit smaller than my current kitchen, even before you add in the fact that there’s no pantry. BUT it may be manageable since we’re close to the store and Paul will be working from home.  So, I plan to live with it over the summer (not that we’ll have extra time available to do anything with it anyway-I have other priorities) but between the fact we feel we got a fair deal on the new house and sold our old house for more than we expected, if by the fall I can’t fit into the new kitchen, we’ll be making some changes.  Also, the range may have a limited life and the microwave (above the range) is not working at this time.

The U.S. House…

We did not realize the difference 2 years would make on the value of our house.  2 years ago, we were struggling to get what we paid for it in 2004 when we moved in. This time? We put it up for $50K more than we bought it for and got 11 offers in one weekend for thousands of dollars over asking.  The first morning after we came home (we put it on the market while we were back at the new house) I thanked God profusely for his timing and the fact that I didn’t have to keep the house clean with 3 kids for random timed showings.  It was crazy. Either the market is looking up or there’s a gold mine under our house we weren’t aware of.  There was literally a line to get into the house Sunday.  Crazy! The Canada house was a good price too. For its location, we were looking at other houses in worse shape that were listed for $20K-$40K more.  Between the two, we’re thankful for trusting in God’s timing and patience and also much more relaxed about repair costs that pop up and moving costs, and government fees and taxes related to the move.
Oh, wait, you want pictures, do you?  I have some, I didn't take great angles, but they'll give you some ideas.... I'll put them in the next post.

Ok, it's official...

Now that my husband has talked to his boss, I can spill the beans. If you know me I've been dying a slow, painful death trying to keep my trap shut, because, well, I like to talk and I love sharing with people, it keeps me sane.  I've known this would happen since like, January and it's now the end of April, just sayin' it's been killing me and yes details have come out, but for the most part I've been keeping quiet.

Anyways...  We are moving to Ontario, Canada.  For reals this time, y'all....  Not like last time (if you are confused, check out blog posts from the first week September 2009... long story short.. We moved to Canada for 2 weeks, Paul left the kids and I there, flew home and then called me to say he'd changed his mind and we had a fast, fun roadtrip home before school started.)

Many of my friends (ok, me too) are still in denial. I mean, I've packed the house before, we've put the house on the market before and put an offer on a house there.  And then we stayed here.  So, I understand, but really, truly, it's happening this time.  2 years ago, I was a bit frustrated but at that time had a feeling that God was trying to teach me something.... to TRUST in him.  So after I stopped crying and got over a case of "what the heck and I supposed to do now???" I stepped back into my WA life.  I prayed.  I was more patient than I've ever been in my entire life.  I started to think "maybe this isn't actually going to happen..." Then in the late summer/early fall Paul turned to me and said, "just so you know, I'm starting to think about trying to move again.  Plan for house hunting in the spring or summer."

I started to get into the moving mindset again... Paul would look at listings online... but nothing really came of it.  Then in January his grandfather passed away. He flew back for the funeral and had a really rough time with realizing the fragility of life.  Grandpa was always the one who told Paul, "I spent too much time working and not enough time with my kids."  and Paul took it to heart.  He started realizing Carter's almost halfway out of the house if he goes off to college!  When he came home we sincerely started the househunt.  Although our last try was disappointing we did learn some things from it and first and foremost was, we needed a house first.

One came up that looked like it was in decent shape, in our price range, in the school district we wanted and it was cheap enough we could cover the ugly with some paint and carpet.  It was decided that I should go look at it.  I booked a ticket on Southwest for the following weekend.  That week another possible house came up.  My inlaws went through it and said the other house was the same price and this one was a better location and way less work.  In fact, it was so nice we made an offer full price contingent on my seeing it over the weekend and an inpection Monday morning.

I flew back and it was much easier on the eyes, much, much better location and I told them we'd take it.  It's a little nerve-wracking picking a house for your family by yourself. We set a closing date for 60 days and I went back home to start packing up and started to feel like maybe it was really going to happen this time.

I'll write more in another post about the house, etc.  It's 2 1/2 months of  stuff, it won't all fit into one post!

Our little streaker

Yep, after 3 kids, we finally got one... one of those kids who wants to be nekkid no matter what. Usually she prefers water. You cannot run a bath or shower in this house without the kid taking her clothing off and trying to get in on the fun and she'll take a bath for over 2 hours.

The problem now is that she's found other times to be nekkid that are not convenient for the rest of us.  Since she's in that lovely transition time where kids can make it through the day without a nap, but if they get in the car and get a nap, they are wide awake all night long, or are cranky at bedtime from being so tired.

We all know V's totally her momma and has a bit of a temper.  The newest thing is to put her in bed and she screams and kicks the door trying to free herself.  And now she gets completely naked and pees on the floor.  Considering the child was practicly potty trained 9 weeks go, I'm so, so over this latest stunt.  It started a few nights ago when she was having an EPIC tantrum and I checked on her to find her buck naked lying on the floor with a full peed pullup on one side of her and a pee spot on the little carpet next to her.  I cleaned up and the next night silly me put her to bed as normal.  Right before we go to bed she's screaming and I go in her bedroom. She's naked in a puddle of pee on her bed (thank you Jesus, we have an extra waterproof mattress cover). Change the bed and now I'm brining out the heavy artillery. The common answer to this issue in Mom's group is footless pajamas put on backwards so they can't reach the zipper. Of course I only have one pajama like this... a hand me down pair from my Hannah Anderson loving neighbor who along with another friend supply me with more clothing than a girl could ever need from their combined FIVE girls.  Anyways, we haven't had problems since, but to put these pajamas on my angry, angry toddler I had to sit over her head (not ON, don't be calling, CPS, people) and it still took me about 10 minutes.  Finally got her calmed down enough (she likes to run, scream and throw herself on the ground) and rubbed her back and belly and she finally fell asleep with those little gasping sobs children do when they've had a good cry before bed.

Attack of the Sharpie Marker

Oh, those words mom fear... "Mom, Henri wrote all over with a Sharpie Marker!"  all over the bathroom walls, counter, cabinet, floor, stool & toilet to be more precise.  He heard me coming up the stairs and did the smart thing (depending on your perspective) and locked the door.  However, I'm a mom of 3, and didn't even bother getting out the flathead screwdriver (I recently replaced all the keyed locks with pop button and screwdriver ones) but used my thumbnail to unlock the door from the outside.

I sent him to his room for his safety.  A few kids ago I would have freaked out and Binged online "how to remove Sharpie" but we have 3 kids, this is not our first rodeo with the dreaded Sharpie marker.... I got out the soft scrub and went to work. It pretty much got everything out. Between the scrubbing and fumes, I'd calmed down to go talk to him.

Then I went to deal with the offender and found him playing 'possum.... well, actually he was asleep.

He woke up around 9pm for a balogna sandwhich and a baby wipe faded most of the marks on his face.  Today I sent him to preschool and informed the teacher it was Sharpie.  This was actually his second time going to school with marker on his face.  Last time he "was a ninja".

Actual trip to the pharmacy with sick kids

Sometimes my friends without kids wonder if it's really as complicated as they hear to do something with 2 or more kids in tow, or my friends with one child wonder about how much harder it will be to do stuff with another child.  I remember how uncomplicated it was to do things with only one child, I get it. I'm starting to get it again now that the boys are in school 2 days a week.  What follows is just one incident from real life. None of these events have been exaggerated.  It is all true in it's rediculousness.  Because, really, you can't make this stuff up.

Background: 3 weeks ago, I drove the kids to Portland to visit my brother and OMSI and threw up the night I arrived. The following weekend I was supposed to visit my grandmother and Valerie threw up Thursday night. Violently, in quick succession. As within 10 minutes she'd thrown up in 2 bathrooms 3 times, her bed, and down my hall stairs.  So I wasn't that surprised when last weekend we were almost to my grandmother's house and Carter informed me he'd thrown up between the seats of the minivan.  So we pulled over, cleaned up as well as we could with babywipes and changed Carter into a pair of Valerie's pants and headed back home where I threw every chemical known to man on the spots trying to get the smell out (BTW... Kids N Pets + Hydrogen Peroxide + Resolve Carpet Cleaner with a topping of Fabreze will get vomit smell out of your car and what auto manufacturer decided putting carpet anywhere in a moving vehicle let alone one designed to move 3+ children in it?  That must be a man. A dumb-ass man. But anyway.....

Henri's also had this violent cough that shows up during the day, but it's ghastly at bedtime and about 430 am in the morning. We've been battling it with honey and Hylands Cough Syrup, but it was getting worse and Carter was getting droopier by the day and taking 1-3 naps a day.  So, off to the doctor we went.

This was my Tuesday....  after we went out running to the bank and postal service with 3 kids in tow because they were all home to go to the doctor, Paul finally had to go to work (thank GOD for a flexible work schedule for him) and at noon I had an appointment to see the doctor.

Noon... we head in to the doctor's office.  Valerie is running around the middle chairs, Carter is laying down on a bench practically asleep, Henri's coughing all over everything without covering his mouth.  Finally we get called in.  Valerie's hot and sweaty from her running around.  Right before the doctor comes in to see the boys she is dancing and spinning around and smacks into the corner of the metal exam table and is crying and looks like a mess when the doctor comes in.  The doctor is actually wondering why Valerie is not also being seen because she actually looks the worst at this exact moment.  After explaining that this is just how she normally looks she takes a peek at the boys.

Henri's verdict is a medium grade ear infection in one ear and fluid in the other.  The drainage in his throat is most likely causing the coughing, so we'll put him on antibiotics, esp since he hasn't had them in 2 years.

Carter has a double ear infection and looks so pale and droopy the doctor says if he doesn't perk up in a few days to bring him back in that there may be something else wrong with him.  I think she's actually worried about him.

So she calls the prescription in.  Ah, the wonders of taking 3 sick children to the drug store.  This picture has been going around FB and I completely understand it...

Paul and I were watching a comedian last night and she was talking about how life is not that complicated for her and how going to the drugstore the worst thing that happens is they move everything around on her.  He says, "it's not so bad, right? " then I told him actual events from Tuesday.

We all file out of the car, eventually we get everyone going in the proper direction of the drugstore and into the store.  The pharmacy is in the back.  Valerie immediately finds a black path of tiles in the floor that goes around the store and takes off, Carter follows her per my plees, Henri and I shoot straight to the back, the most direct route.  We all meet up in the back.  Henri starts playing with the sign of where to wait. Valerie joins him.  I pick her up and tell Henri to stop.  Valerie starts flailing and kicks Henri in the head, Henri starts crying, Valerie starts crying because Henri hits her.  Finally it's our turn... to find out that it will be another 15 minutes.  We walk over to McDonalds because now they are all starving.  Share some food and go back, pretty much the same running around the store.

Then we can get home for the drama of trying to get nasty tasting meds into Carter :)  but that's another story...

So does this make me the bad cop?

Lately it seems that Paul has been playing the good cop to my bad cop.  I no longer offer alternatives to dinner, just lots of side dishes.  When the boys look at dinner their first question besides, "what is this?" is "when will Daddy be home?"  The exact time does not actually matter. What matters is if Dad's off curling or if he'll be home after dinner from work. Because mom doesn't take lightly her food being snubbed. Dad's happy to pour a bowl of cereal before bed. Mom sends you to bed with a cheese stick and a pat on the head.

This was further evidenced 2 nights ago when Carter kept coming into our room,

C: "I can't sleep."
Mom: "You have to go to sleep."
C: "I just can't seem to sleep."
Mom: "Have you tried closing your eyes?  Turning off the lights? Breathing deeply? Praying? "
Carter leaves, dejected.... 2 minutes later...
C: "I still can't sleep"
Mom: "Did you try putting a pillow over your face?"  (I'm just kidding people, no bad e-mails. My kids speak fluent sarcasm by age 3 and know I'm kidding)
C: "Mom"  (eyes roll)
Dad says nothing, even when Carter climbs into bed and watches him play games on the surface.
Mom: "Carter! Get in bed now!"
C: sighs, rolls eyes and goes to bed.

I go downstairs to do something.  I hear footsteps back into my room.  I loudly climb the stairs.

Carter to Paul: "uh, oh, I gotta go." races out of room.

So today, Henri asks Paul, "Daddy, can I play XBox?"
Paul: "why don't you ask Mommy?"
Henri begins to cry.
"I don't like asking Mommy"

Guess we know who the bad cop is around here.  Sheesh!

Spring Clean finale!

Day11-Playroom/Rec Room

First, the top of the room-dust cobwebs, lampshades, light fixtures and wall decorations.  10 mintutes.

Start by going through the stuff and toys.  Go through shelf by shelf. Work top to bottom, left to right so you don’t miss anything.  You’ll need a couple piles: Give away, trash (a bag), fix/needs batteries/lost piece (if you can’t fix or don’t find all the pieces by the end of all this, these need to be given up on and thrown away).  As you take the toys out of cabinets and shelves, wipe down the shelves. Pull them back from the wall when one unit is done and give a wipe to the wall and clean the floor and baseboards behind them… you’ll be surprised what you find… probably some missing puzzle pieces or those keys that went missing a few months ago!  This will take most of the time. 2 hours to 2 days!

Office

Start by clearing surfaces and removing anything that belongs elsewhere, especially if your office is your home’s dumping ground/storage J  Next, consider doing Julie’s paper challenge.  Go through your file cabinet, inbox, any filing papers. Go through all files.  Get rid of anything you no longer need, bills over a year old, tax return files over 7 years.  File anything “to be filed” and shred anything sensitive or put in a paper bag to take somewhere to have shredded, recycle anything not sensitive. 30 minutes to 5 hours.

Dust corners for cobwebs, light fixtures, wall decorations.  Dust or wash the window blinds.  Wash the window, take vinegar, Q-tips and a rag to the window slide and wash the sill. 30 minutes.

Working left to right, top to bottom go through your office.  Get rid of anything that does not belong in your office. Put it in a basket or box and everytime it fills up, take 5 minutes and put things away where they belong.  Check your supplies… Do you have enough/the right amount of office supplies-pens, pencils, paperclips, printer paper, printer inks, etc?  If you are in need of items, make a list and put it in the car so the next time you are out you can stop and pickup what you need. If you have too much, donate or give to a friend who may need them. 30 minutes

If you haven’t filed your taxes, go through your tax file and see what’s missing and organize what’s in there-income items in the front of the file, expenses in the back. 10 minutes

Tackle your inbox-take action where needed-write down appointments, send e-mails.  Recycle anything you no longer need and then get a few envelopes, clips or file folders and mark “keep handy” for things you need at your fingertips; “to do” for items that require action beyond your office; file anything to file, since you already went through your file cabinet.  Have a divider; bright paper or cardboard and put it on top, then you know what items are new in your inbox. Consider having a time each week set aside to go through new items and to do items so you don’t get bogged down. 30 minutes

Kid stuff.  Any art projects, writings, etc.  Once a month or semester scan the ones that you love or take a picture if they are big. Then, I give you permission to pitch that sucker.  Your welcome.  20-60 minutes depending on backup

Magazines and books-anything you aren’t currently reading goes in a too be read pile. Think about where you read periodicals-in the bathroom? In the car while waiting?  Stick a few in that spot.  If you have a huge pile consider recycling anything over say 3-6 months old. If you haven’t read it by now, chances are you aren’t going to.  Round up books from the library and designate a spot for them so they don’t get lost.  Any that have been read put in the car to return next time you are out. 10 minutes.

Digital files-oh, my, this could take awhile.  Start with your e-mail… all accounts.  Your regular e-mail, delete any e-mails you no longer need, make file folders for regular categories, but during this cleaning go through each folder and clean out items that are no longer relevant.  Take action or flag items needing attention, UNSUBSCRIBE to lists you no longer want to be on.  File e-mails by category that you need to save but don’t need to refer to on a daily basis.

Now tackle any junk or work e-mail accounts.  Then move on to your Facebook messages.  Time may vary.

Next your computer.  Think about all the places files are stored….. desktop, external hard drive or two, c: drive, cloud, etc. Tackle one at a time.  If you open it and it’s just a huge list of files, make file folders! For example, I have one called “household” for cleaning routines, school stuff, library numbers, etc. one for business, one for clients, one for pictures, etc.  Go through and delete anything you no longer use and file away files you need so you can find them. You should be able to find any file in 5 minutes.  If something gives no clue to what it is by the file name, right click on it and RENAME to something that makes sense!  Start on your desktop, then harddrive on your computer, then externals and online storage.  THIS is the time to make a plan to do a backup. If it’s going to take awhile, consider setting it for overnight (change your power settings so your computer doesn’t turn off in the middle) but make sure it gets done. If you don’t backup during spring cleaning you probably won’t!  You’ll thank me later. Time may vary.

Crafting or Hobbies-

This could take awhile as well.  Start going through supplies with recycle bin, garbage, donate bin and any extra storage bins you may be able to use.  Start with the largest pile. For me it’s scrapbook paper, for you it may be fabric. Sort through once for what you want to keep v. get rid of then get some labels and organize what you have in a way that makes sense… by color, theme, etc.  Then move to the next group and so on. I can’t give you much more detail than that since your hobbies may vary. But go through with the idea of making it so that you can find what you are looking for in just a few minutes. Label any drawers/bins you can’t see through.  Put things you use more often within arm’s reach, anything you use less often can be stored elsewhere, think about storage in vertical terms… go up that wall!

Hopefully by now your office/craft/hobby space is uncluttered. Dust and wipe surfaces, vacuum and steam clean or mop if necessary.
